Pet Friendly Plants Collection
Everybody wants their pets to be able to enjoy the household plants as much as they do themselves. But if your home has both pets and houseplants it’s important to understand that not all plants are safe for your furry companions. There are enough pet-friendly plants in every variety from hanging ferns to mini trees, bushy and colorful, that you could easily decorate your home only with those house plants deemed pet friendly. But sometimes you are attracted to another option that may not be 100% pet friendly. With precautions most households can still have both these things exist with no issues. There are steps you can take to make it less likely that any issues would ever occur between your plants and pets such as:
Ensure your pets are safe when left alone. Use crates or block access to plant areas to prevent them from consuming plants when you’re not at home supervising.
Cover the soil of the plants if your pets love to dig. In this case it’s more the dirt/soil that is attracting your pet than the leaves. So protect the soil by covering it with materials like shells, pebbles, or tin foil that won't feel comfortable under their paws
You can always keep harmful plants in secure areas that are already off-limits to your pets. Rooms where doors remain closed most of the time like a spare bedroom or bathroom. If you only have dogs a higher shelf or fireplace mantle can even keep the plants out of reach. It’s an out of sight, out of mind mentality
Using deterrent sprays is a smart option, especially if you already know they work well on your pets from puppyhood, etc. A no-chew spray, such as bitter apple or diluted lemon juice, can help discourage your pets from munching on your beloved plants and typically won’t harm your plants either
Lasty give your pets alternatives for digging or chewing behavior. Offer your pets designated areas for scratching or chewing such as scratching posts and digging spot outside or in the garden. Always have interactive toys or toys designed for chewers as well as bones down on the floor to keep the pets busy and happy.
