Eve Needle Cactus

The Eve Needle Cactus, also known as Austrocylindropuntia subulata, is a unique and striking plant that can be a great addition to your indoor or outdoor garden. Known for its tall, columnar shape and long, needle-like spines, this cactus is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.  This cactus grows up to 13 feet tall and 10 feet wide with deep green leaves. It develops yellowish-red spines as it matures and occasionally blooms with long, coppery red flowers. Native to Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, and Bolivia, it is suitable for containers, raised beds, cactus gardens, and atriums. Eve’s Needle Cactus is a branching, tree-like specimen in the cacti family. Once rooted, it requires minimal care and grows relatively fast.

PLANT CARE TIPS

Watering

Like most cacti, the Eve Needle Cactus does not require frequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water every two to three weeks. In the dormant period (fall and winter), reduce watering to once a month or less.

Lighting

This cactus thrives in bright, direct sunlight and should receive at least six hours of sunlight daily. For indoor growing, place it near a south-facing window. If natural light is insufficient, supplement with a grow light.

Heat & Humidity

Prefers warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C) and low humidity. It tolerates cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost. Bring the cactus indoors during cold months in colder climates.

Soil Medium

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix containing sand or perlite. Pots should have drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

• Pruning: Not typically necessary, but trimming can help control size or shape. Use clean, sharp tools.
• Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when it outgrows its pot. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh cactus mix.
• Water Caution: Overwatering is a common issue. Always ensure the soil is dry before watering. Use a moisture meter for accuracy.
• Pests: Watch for mealybugs or spider mites. Treat with gentle insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
• Sunburn: Acclimate gradually to intense light after being in lower light conditions to avoid sunburn.
• Frost Damage: If frost-damaged, trim affected areas down to the wood. It should recover in spring and summer.
