NERVE PLANT - SILVER
Fittonia, commonly known as the nerve plant, is a popular houseplant known for its striking foliage and relatively easy care. This trendy indoor plant is a tiny evergreen with dark-green leaves featuring delicate silver-white veins, although some varieties also display red, pink, white, or green patterns. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Peru, Fittonia is a favorite among plant enthusiasts and interior decorators. It typically grows only 3 to 6 inches tall but can spread up to 18 inches like a leafy carpet. Occasionally, it produces dainty reddish or yellowish-white blooms indoors. In the right spot, it can even serve as a shady ground cover, adding a touch of lush beauty to any space.
PLANT CARE TIPS
Watering
The nerve plant is named for its dramatic drooping when thirsty. It thrives in rainforest-like humidity, making it ideal for terrariums or bathrooms. Keep the soil consistently moist. If it droops, don’t worry—it usually perks right back up after watering. However, frequent drooping can stress the plant and should be avoided.
Lighting
This plant prefers bright, indirect light. North or east-facing windows are ideal. It can also be grown under grow lights, which provide more consistent lighting and increase your chances of success, especially for beginners.
Heat & Humidity
Fittonia loves high humidity and temperatures between 65–80°F. Avoid placing it near drafts, vents, or frequently opened windows and doors.
Soil Medium
Use a basic potting mix with a peat moss base. To improve drainage and moisture retention, add approximately 20% perlite. This balance helps prevent root rot while maintaining adequate moisture.
Common Issues
- ✔️ Wilting Leaves: May indicate under-watering or low humidity. Check soil moisture and increase humidity.
- ✔️ Leaf Drop: Often due to drafts or sudden temperature changes.
- ✔️ Brown Leaf Edges: Usually caused by low humidity or over-fertilization.
- ✔️ Yellowing Leaves: Typically a sign of overwatering.
Additional Benefits:
Fittonia acts as a natural air purifier and its colorful foliage adds a vibrant touch to your indoor décor. It’s a unique and beautiful addition to any houseplant collection, perfect for both beginners and seasoned plant lovers.
