Dwarf Umbrella Tree

Schefflera arboricola, or "Umbrella Tree," is a fast grower when its sunlight and watering needs are met. It can reach up to 6 feet and has a tree-like appearance, making it a statement piece indoors. Miniature versions are popular in bonsai gardening. Common names include umbrella tree/plant and octopus tree.

PLANT CARE TIPS

Watering

Root rot is a common issue. Although they like to stay slightly moist, it's best to water only when the soil is dry. Use a deep moisture meter and ensure the pot is appropriately sized. Overwatering is easy if the soil below is still wet while the top appears dry.

Lighting

Provide bright or moderate indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light can stunt growth.

Heat & Humidity

Avoid placing near drafty windows, doors, or vents. Ideal temperatures are between 60°F and 90°F. Being tropical, they love humidity—great for bathrooms or regular misting.

Soil Medium

Use well-draining soil, ideally with sand or peat moss. Repot every couple of years. They grow top-heavy, so use a sturdy pot to prevent tipping.

Common Issues

  • Top-heavy plants may tip over if not properly stabilized.
  • Susceptible to pests like spider mites, scale insects, mealybugs, and aphids.
  • Basic pesticides and early detection help manage infestations.

Popular Varieties

The Schefflera genus includes about 600 species, native to Asia, Africa, and the southwestern Pacific. Popular houseplant varieties include:

  • Schefflera Arboricola: Compact, variegated leaves. Grows up to 6 feet indoors.
  • Schefflera Alpina: Grows as a tree or shrub with dark, glossy leaves up to 6 feet tall.
  • Schefflera Actinophylla: Known for oval leaves up to 10 inches. Can grow up to 15 feet indoors.

With proper care, Umbrella Trees can live up to 25 years!
