Raven ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia. The ZZ Plant is a great choice for beginners thanks to its tolerance for low light and minimal care needs. Raven ZZs are a variety of the ZZ houseplant, characterized by their deep purple, nearly black, waxy leaves. New growth starts bright green and darkens over time. Individual leaflets typically measure 1 to 3 inches in length. These plants are excellent for home or office spaces and help purify the air.
Plant Care Tips
Watering
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. ZZ plants store water in large rhizomes at the base, enabling them to survive weeks without water. Be cautious of overwatering, as root rot is a common issue.
Lighting
ZZ plants thrive in medium to bright indirect light but also adapt well to low-light conditions. However, growth will be slower in dimmer environments. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch or discolor the leaves.
Heat & Humidity
ZZ plants tolerate a wide range of temperatures but should not be exposed to anything below 45°F. Ideally, keep them around 60°F or slightly above. They tolerate average household humidity well and don’t require extra moisture.
Soil Medium
Use a well-draining, peat moss–based potting mix. ZZ plants are highly susceptible to root rot if water is retained in the soil for too long.
Pruning
Pruning prevents legginess. Use sharp, sterile pruners to cut stems at a 45-degree angle just above a leaf node. Remove aging leaves and trim stems back an inch or two to promote bushier growth.
Raven ZZ vs. Standard ZZ
While both varieties share many traits, some key differences set the Raven ZZ apart:
Characteristic | Raven ZZ | Standard ZZ |
---|---|---|
Appearance | New leaves emerge bright green and darken to deep purple-black. | Glossy, dark green oval-shaped leaves in a symmetrical pattern. |
Growth Rate | Moderate growth. Color transition from green to black adds visual interest. | Moderate growth. Can reach 3–4 feet indoors under ideal conditions. |
Light Requirements | Adapts to various lighting but thrives in medium to bright indirect light. | Very adaptable; grows in low to bright indirect light and even under fluorescents. |
Availability | Newer and less common. High demand due to unique appearance. | Widely available as a common houseplant. |
Though similar in care, the Raven ZZ’s dramatic, dark foliage offers a striking alternative to the standard ZZ, making it a great addition to modern interiors.
